venice

A detail on a gondola.

An old law required gondolas to be painted black.

Sweets in a bakery window.

These tasted vaguely like chocolate chip cookies.

All of the courtyards had one or two capped wells in them.

Part of the interior courtyard of the Doge's palace. The Doge was essentially the ceremonial ruler of Venice.

There were mail slots within the palace where people could make anonymous accusations against others. (I think the inscription means something like "Denounce those secretly to the officials who have not reported their true income".) At any rate it looked creepy.

La Scala d'Oro (the Golden Staircase). This was the ceremonial staircase that led to the Doge's apartments.

A detail of one of the many paintings inside the Doge's palace.

Looking out through a window of the palace.

Restoration work going on inside the palace.

A gun of some sort inside one of the weapon rooms of the palace.

A part of Tintoretto's Paradise, one of the largest paintings in the world. (Also inside the palace, in the Grand Council chamber.)
